How to Prepare Your Air Conditioning for a Melbourne Summer

Every summer it happens the same way. The first heatwave hits, the temperature climbs above 38 degrees, and the calls start coming in. The problem is that by the time you realise your air conditioner isn't working properly, every HVAC technician in the area is already booked out for two to three weeks.

The solution is simple: get your system checked in October or November, before the heat arrives. Here's exactly what to do.

1. Run your system now and check it

Before summer arrives, switch your split system or ducted air conditioning to cooling mode and run it for 20-30 minutes. You're looking for:

•        Does it reach the set temperature in a reasonable time?

•        Is the airflow strong and consistent from all vents?

•        Does it make any unusual noises — grinding, rattling, or squealing?

•        Is there any unusual smell — musty, burning, or chemical?

If you notice any of these issues, call now while there's still time to get it assessed and fixed before the heat.

2. Clean or replace your filters

This is the most important and most neglected maintenance task for air conditioners. A dirty filter restricts airflow, forces the system to work harder, reduces cooling efficiency, and degrades the air quality in your home.

Most split system filters can be removed, gently washed with warm water, dried thoroughly, and replaced. Check your owner's manual for the specific process for your unit. If you're not sure, call Alby Cool — it takes minutes as part of a service call.

3. Check the outdoor unit

The outdoor compressor unit does the heavy lifting of your air conditioning system. Before summer:

•        Clear any leaves, debris, or overgrown plants from around the unit — it needs at least 30cm of clear space on all sides for adequate airflow

•        Check for any visible damage, rust, or corrosion — particularly important for coastal properties in Seaford, Patterson Lakes, and along the Mornington Peninsula foreshore

•        Make sure the unit is sitting level — it should not be tilting or vibrating on its base

4. Book an annual service

An annual professional service does what you can't do yourself. A qualified technician checks refrigerant levels, tests electrical connections, inspects and cleans the indoor and outdoor coils, checks the condensate drain, and identifies anything that could cause the system to fail under summer load.

Think of it like a car service — you can check the tyre pressure yourself, but you still need a mechanic to look at everything underneath.

5. If your system is more than 10 years old — consider replacement

Older systems are significantly less efficient than modern units and far more likely to fail during a heatwave — exactly when you can least afford it. If your system has been giving you trouble, the smart move is to replace it before summer rather than risk it failing when temperatures are at their peak and technicians are at their busiest.

If replacement qualifies for a Victorian Energy Upgrades rebate, you may be eligible for up to $3,560 off — making the decision significantly easier financially.
