Signs Your Air Conditioning System Needs Replacing

Every heating and cooling system has a lifespan. The question most homeowners struggle with is whether to repair an ageing system one more time — or cut their losses and replace it. Getting this decision wrong in either direction costs money.

1. Your system is more than 10–15 years old

Most air conditioning and heating systems are designed to last between 10 and 15 years with regular servicing. Beyond that, components wear out, efficiency drops, and the cost of keeping the system running starts to outweigh the cost of replacement.

If your system is approaching or past this age and you're experiencing any of the other signs below, replacement is almost certainly the more economical choice.

2. Your energy bills keep climbing

An ageing HVAC system has to work harder to deliver the same result — and that shows up directly on your energy bill. If you've noticed your electricity or gas costs increasing year on year without a corresponding change in your usage patterns, your system's declining efficiency is likely the cause.

Modern reverse cycle systems are significantly more energy efficient than units from even 10 years ago. In many cases, the energy savings from a new system will offset a substantial portion of the replacement cost over time.

3. It's struggling to heat or cool your home

If your system is running constantly but your home still isn't reaching a comfortable temperature, or if some rooms are comfortable while others remain stubbornly hot or cold, the system may no longer have the capacity to do the job it was installed for.

This can happen for several reasons — the system has lost efficiency with age, the property has changed (extensions, new rooms), or the original system was undersized to begin with. Either way, a professional assessment will clarify whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

4. You're calling for repairs more frequently

One repair every few years is normal. But if you're finding yourself calling a technician every season — or multiple times a year — the cumulative repair costs are almost certainly approaching the cost of a new system.

A useful rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than 50% of the value of a new equivalent system, replacement is the smarter financial decision.

5. The system makes unusual noises

Modern air conditioning and heating systems run quietly. If your system has developed grinding, banging, rattling, or squealing noises it didn't make before, that's a sign of internal mechanical failure — worn bearings, a failing compressor, or loose components.

Some of these issues can be repaired, but in older systems they often signal broader mechanical decline. A technician can assess whether it's worth fixing or whether the underlying system is simply at the end of its life.

6. It uses R22 refrigerant

If your system was installed before 2010, it may use R22 refrigerant — a substance that has been phased out in Australia due to its environmental impact. R22 is no longer manufactured in Australia, which means it's increasingly scarce and expensive when needed for top-ups or repairs.

If your system uses R22, replacement isn't just economically sensible — it's increasingly unavoidable.

7. There's visible deterioration on the outdoor unit

The outdoor compressor unit takes the brunt of the weather year-round. Some surface weathering is normal, but significant rust, corrosion, or physical damage to the casing or components is a sign that the system's lifespan is coming to an end.

In coastal areas like Seaford, Patterson Lakes, and the Mornington Peninsula foreshore, salt air accelerates this deterioration significantly. If you're in a coastal suburb, it's worth having your outdoor unit assessed annually.

8. Replacement qualifies for a government rebate

If you're replacing an older system with a new energy-efficient reverse cycle unit, you may be eligible for a substantial rebate through the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program — up to $5,530 in some cases.
